A PATIENT at Mpilo Central Hospital yesterday evening tried to commit suicide by jumping from the third floor of a male ward, but only sustained a broken arm after landing on the roof of the first floor.
MTHANDAZO NYONI OWN CORRESPONDENT According to witnesses, the man, believed to be in his 70s, appeared to be having mental problems. Others said he had suffered a fracture on his leg.
When Southern Eye arrived at the hospital at 8:30pm he had been whisked to the casualty ward where he was being attended to.
The nurses refused to entertain any questions and the atmosphere was very tense. The Bulawayo City Council’s Fire Brigade was called to rescue the patient. Linos Phiri, the brigade’s divisional head confirmed the incident. He said indications were that the patient did not suffer severe injuries.
Mpilo chief executive officer Lawrence Mantiziba could not be reached for comment last night.
