The company early this year acquired a VB1 plant from South Africa, which is capable of producing 12 000 hollow blocks in a nine hour shift.

Hawkflight used to buy bricks for its several housing projects from from MacDonald Bricks before it acquired the machinery.

Martin Moyo, the company’s operations manager told Southern Eye Business the large skill production of bricks would see Hawkflight selling bricks to clients in the public and private sectors..

“Hawkflight is planning to expand into the manufacturing sector in order to support its construction business,” he said.

“We have procured brick moulding plant for cement concrete bricks and red-clay bricks to support construction development..

“There is high demand for our bricks and we have plans to expand production and produce at a large scale in order to meet demand.” Hawkflight is also considering constructing a silo to accommodate at least 60 tonnes of cement at any given time to maintain continuous supply of cement for its projects.

Moyo encouraged local authorities to make more land available to private developers for housing projects.

He said demand for accommodation was high in Bulawayo, but housing developers were struggling to meet demand due to the liquidity crunch.

“Our clients are failing to meet our expectations due to liquidity crunch and because of that, we have introduced housing schemes in trying to accommodate them,” Moyo said.

Hawkflight has an ongoing housing scheme where it builds core unit houses and hands them to prospective home seekers upon completion. Beneficiaries pay between $120 and $130 over a period of 10 to 12 years.

Through the scheme the company built 185 houses at the new Pelandaba West suburb.

Hawkflight is working on 3 500 houses at Emthunzini Township, which is located between Pumula South and Nkulumane suburbs. It is also working on projects in Gwanda and Plumtree.

The company invested about $2 million last year in the acquisition of state-of-the-art machinery as it consolidated its position in the property sector.
