BULAWAYO – Livestock auctioneers, Cattle Company Sales (CC Sales) cattle sales held steady in the in the first half of the year despite poor liquidity in the economy, recording a nearly two percent drop, an official has said.

CC Sales director Charles Rundle told The Source that they auctioned 12 837 cattle from January to June compared to 13 073 last year, a drop by 1,8%.

“To me the figure is nothing because I believe we achieved much (in the half year),” Rundle said.

“We had better quality of cattle because of good rains we received last year in December. We had steers, heifers, cows, calves, breeding cows and bulls.”

With each beast averaging $1 055 he said prices were good, and projected better sales in the second half due to high demand and low supply.

CC Sales has been involved in cattle sales and auctions since it was formed in 1911 and has offices in Bulawayo and Gweru.

An agriculture ministry assessment report released recently showed that cattle production increased by 1,8% to 5,3 million in the 2013 to 2014 season compared to the prior season.

A total of cattle 325 974 were slaughtered, producing 55 132 metric tonnes of beef.

Pig production also increased to 342 000 from 316 000 and goats increased to 3,9 million from 3,7 million in the previous season. However, sheep production declined from 525 000 to 521 000.
