THE draw for the first edition of the $500 000 Chibuku Super Cup for all 16 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams is on tomorrow. SPORTS CORRESPONDENT
This will be the second knockout competition in the league this term after the One Wallet Cup. The Chibuku Super Cup is scheduled for the weekend of August 16 to 17 with the quarter-finals set for September 12 to 24.
PSL chief executive Kenny Ndebele said: “We are going to have a draw for the Chibuku Super Cup on Wednesday (tomorrow) involving all the 16 teams. As you are aware we launched the tournament, so on Wednesday (tomorrow) we are having a draw.”
On the live broadcast of the games, Ndebele said: “We are still working with Supersport on that, but obviously we will screen some of the games as we do with the PSL games. We cannot screen all of them especially in the initial stages.”
Initially, the tournament had been slated for May and August, but it was revised owing to a congested fixtures programme by the top-flight league management due to renovations to Barbourfields and Luveve stadiums for the 2014 Region V Games that will be staged in December in Bulawayo.
The league will also have the Mbada Diamonds Cup from October to December and are looking to tie up another competition that might involve two teams this year and 16 next season.
On the day of the draw, PSL teams will be in action with defending Dynamos who were held to a goalless draw by army side Black Rhinos at Rimuka Stadium on Sunday facing struggling Chicken Inn at the National Sports Stadium.
The champions are in third place on the league table with 31 points from 17 matches — one behind leaders Highlanders who were also held to a goalless draw by How Mine. And this is the best chance they have of leaping to the top of the standings.
