The fights were initially pencilled for June before they were postponed to July.

Former Zimbabwe light and middleweight boxing champion Mordecai Donga yesterday explained why they have again moved the bouts.

“We have just been cleared by the board (Zimbabwe Wrestling and Boxing Board of Control). We are expecting to get our boxing stable licence today (yesterday). We are very happy that we have finally got it because we have been trying to get it since January. We believe that will change the fortunes of the sport,” he said.

“However, this has resulted in us postponing the international fights that were due to be held in Bulawayo to December. We need to do a lot of work in preparation for the fights. There is need for us to look into contracts, medicals and sponsorship.

“We need time to convince sponsors that they should assist us in holding the tournament.”

The stable which seeks to promote local boxers and bring international pugilists to fight with locals was launched Donga and his partners in March.

During the launch Donga said a Zambian light heavyweight pugilist Anos Temfuna will trade leather with a local boxer in the main bout of their international bill which will also three supporting international bouts and two local fights.

The budget for the tournament is set at $35 000. Bulawayo last had a professional boxing tournament in 2011 at the Large City Hall while the last professional international boxing fights were last held in the city at the Bulawayo Polytechnic in 2006.
