A DETEMA Secondary School teacher was on Friday convicted by the Hwange Magistrates’ Court for sexually abusing two girls for close to a year.

NOKUTHABA DLAMINI OWN CORRESPONDENT Talent Bhekinkosi Nyathi (27) from Nkulumane 5 in Bulawayo was convicted on his own plea of guilty by Hwange provincial magistrate Rose Dube.

According to the State’s documents, sometime in September 2013, the teacher approached two 15-year-old girls and told them that he had organised for the Red Cross to pay their school fees as they could not afford to raise funds.

During the same month, Nyathi proposed love to the girls, but they turned him down.

He then threatened to terminate the donor agreement if they refused to have sexual intercourse with him and the two complied.

He started sexually violating the girls from October and threatened to make them fail at school should they disclose the matter to anyone.

The matter only came to light in May after the two’s parents approached the school complaining that their children were sent home to collect school fees for two terms yet their teacher had told them donors were funding their schooling and their parents should stop paying.

Nyathi denied knowing about that arrangement, but the girls revealed that they were sleeping with him so the donor could keep on paying their school fees.

The girls were taken to Hwange Hospital for tests and it was discovered that one of them was already pregnant.

The teacher told the court that the two were his girlfriends and had consensual sexual intercourse with him.

The two denied the claims saying they only slept with him to cool down his temper and to keep the donor “paying” their school fees.

They also revealed that he used to beat them thoroughly in class if they spurned his sexual advances and they were forced into sleeping with Nyathi to stop the class beatings. They said the abuse used to happen during lessons in his office.

Nyathi was remanded in custody for sentencing on September 3.
