THE African Union Sports Council Region V Under-20 Games mascot’s name will be announced on Tuesday before the mascot is unveiled on September 6, local organising committee marketing director Kennedy Ndebele said yesterday.

SUKOLUHLE MTHETHWA SPORTS REPORTER Proposals for the mascot’s name have come from schools from around the city.

The regional organising committee and the marketing sub-committee will meet on Monday before the winning school for the name is announced on Tuesday.

“We are going to unveil the mascot on September 6. There will be a roadshow that will start from the city centre to high-density suburbs like Mpopoma, Njube, Nkulumane, Nketa and it will also go to Famona,” he said.

Ndebele detailed the reasons for embarking on the roadshow.

“We want to conscientise and create awareness to the public about the upcoming Region V Under-20 Youth Games. The mascot will be our key marketing tool. We want Bulawayo residents to have a sense of ownership and pride in hosting the games,” he said.

Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe are the Region V countries expected to take part in the games to be played under the theme “Reach for Greatness”.

Other countries expected to feature in the competition are Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles.

They have shown their willingness to take part and have confirmed their availability.

Bulawayo Athletic Club, Bulawayo City Pool, Barbourfields Stadium, Luveve Stadium and White City Stadium will be the venues for the game.

The venues are undergoing refurbishment in preparation for the showcase that will see athletes compete in sporting disciplines which include athletics, basketball, boxing, football, judo, netball, tennis and swimming.
