The pugilists are Samson Masiyambumbi and Prosper Shumba of Nketa, Emmanuel Katsaruware of Lobengula and Andile Ncube of Tshaka.

The tournament, which featured 11 bouts was attended by the national chairman of referees and judges in the Zimbabwe National Boxing Board of Control, Dennis Mudara.

Katsaruware lost to Wiseman Tshuma of Lobengula on points in the bantamweight division while Ncube got the better of Lancelot Moyo in the light welterweight category.

Shumba beat Denzel Mpofu of Lobengula in the lightweight division. Another light welterweight division bout featured Masiyambumbi and Ncube with the former winning by a knockout.

Baba vice-chairman Ezwell Ndlovu yesterday said they would continue to host the tournaments.

Mudara also said more tournaments will be held in the city to help national selectors assess boxers.

“There will be more tournaments like this to help selectors check our boxers’ strengths. The last time we hosted an event as big as the Region V Games was in 1995 during the All-Africa Games. As such, we have to field strong teams which will raise our flag high and such tournaments will aid us towards that goal,” Mudara said.

In other fights that were held at Manor on Saturday, Everson Mushambidzi of Nkulumane knocked Godknows Sithole of HQ1 Brigade out in the light weight section.

In the light flyweight category, Steven Ndlovu of Percy Ibboston beat Mduduzi Magokombe of Gweru on points while Ntando Dube of Percy beat Future Nkomo on points in the bantamweight.

Mushambidzi was back in the ring and lost on points to Milton Moyo of Lobengula in the lightweight division.

Liberty Mukwani of Gweru beat Prince Masona of HQ1 Brigade on points in the middleweight division.
