The renewal team’s interim Bulawayo provincial chairperson and prominent human rights lawyer Kucaca Phulu told Southern Eye in an interview yesterday his party was preoccupied with building its structures than looking at what was happening in the Tsvangirai-led faction.

“We have held two meetings with our structures. What we want is to reach out to the generality of the population so that we solidify our structures,” he said.

“We also want to inform the structures on the key issues of the party and its ideology.

“We want to hear from them what they want and take that as the message for the upcoming elections.

“I don’t think we are there to upstage the MDC-T. Our objective is to build our structures and develop a message for Zimbabweans on our point. We are certainly aware of what is happening in MDC-T, but they are not our target. The issue for a political party is to look inward and see what we have for the people.”

He said his party was not going to participate in any election without the implementation of electoral and media reforms.

“We remain concerned with the situation in the media in terms of awarding licences to new players,” Phulu said.

“In Bulawayo, the slots are very few and don’t represent the diversity we have in the city and even nationally.

“We campaigned for a long time for media reforms, but Zanu PF wants to remain in control of the media space and doesn’t want to take a huge step in licensing new players.

“The voters’ roll is still in the custody of Registrar-General Tobaiwa Mudede despite the fact that it’s unconstitutional.

“The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission should be in charge of the voters’ roll. We know that the voters’ roll contains ghost voters and is in shambles.

“We will continue to monitor the democratic space and campaign for reforms. It’s premature for us to talk about elections now. Our position is no elections without reforms and we are serious about these reforms,” Phulu added.

He was unveiled as the Bulawayo provincial chairperson at a meeting held two weeks ago at the Large City Hall.
