Initially, the competition had been set for December 7 in Bulawayo, but was brought forward to November 16 as Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) was avoiding a clash between the race and the African Union Sports Council Region V Youth Games to be held in the City from December 5 to 15.

BAB secretary-general Dailes Bingadadi yesterday spoke to Southern Eye Sport on the preparations for the Choppies race.

“The Choppies 10km race date has been shifted from November 16 to November 23 on the request of the sponsors. They indicated that they wanted the competition to be closer to their original date which was December 7,” she said.

“However, the prizes have not yet been set, but we are hoping that they would increase them.”

The race which was formerly SPAR 10km race before it was rebranded to Choppies 10km race was sponsored to the tune of R100 000 last year.

South Africa-based middle-distance runner Rutendo Nyahora successfully defended the title after she crossed the line in 35min 17sec.

In 2012, Nyahora won the title in 31min 10sec while the previous year she completed the race in 32min 41sec.

Kevin Pangiso romped home first in 30min 31sec to win the race in the men’s category.

Last year’s winners in the seniors in both men and women’s categories pocketed R5 000 each. Runners-up walked away with R3 000, third- placed athletes got R1 500 while fourth-placed athletes received R500 each.

In the juniors and wheelchair categories, both men and women winners walked away R1 500 richer.

Runners-up grabbed R1 000 while second runners-up were awarded R750 each.
