Washington Gwaka (28), stationed at 52 Infantry Battalion, was yesterday convicted and sentenced on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before provincial magistrate Letwin Rwodzi.

Gwaka, who admitted to violently resisting arrest by police officer Samuel Mataka on October 14 at Redcliff shopping centre, was, however, spared jail after the court gave him an option to pay a $200 fine.

The court heard that Gwaka punched Mataka once on his left cheek after the latter attempted to arrest him for public drinking.

A medical report which was presented in court confirmed the assault.
