The fun day has become an annual event and this year the highlight will be a battle of Bulawayo’s best chéfs dubbed the “Ultimate Braai Challenge” which will determine the supreme braai master.

“Admission to the fun day is free as we believe that this is a way of giving back to customers and our surrounding community,” said one of the event organisers Siphokuhle Nkomazana.

She said events would include police dog displays, a fire engine show, pony rides, car displays and vintage car displays to entertain people.

For the braai challenge, Nkomazana said the theme would be “In The Bush” where contestants will only be allowed to use firewood or coal to braai without any electrical tools like blenders.

Contesting chéfs are Eddie Msipha from Holiday Inn, Aaron Mukwenha from Bulawayo Rainbow, Cresta Churchill’s Richard Dhaitiya, Shadreck Chikosa of Nesbitt Castle, Jimson Mapako from Canella Restaurant, Proud Banda from Travellers Guest Lodge and Chantelle Gilbert of the Bean There Café.

“We also have a four-member panel of judges namely Kimba, Hansy, Nicole and Senzeni who are from Indaba Book Café, Middy’s Spot and the Walnut respectively,” said Nkomazana.

“The challenge will be held over three rounds with the first being a starter preparation, followed by a main course and dessert preparation, then finally there will a preparation of all three meals.”

Chéf Innocent from the Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel won the competition last year, but he will not be able to defend his title as he has since relocated.

“After the competition, we will have an open session where families can braai for themselves in the fun mood of the day,” Nkomazana said.

FAVCO, National Foods and Megamaster have partnered with Fazak as sponsors of the event.
