CASTLE Lager Premier Soccer league side Buffaloes failed to utilise home advantage after they succumbed to a 2-1 league defeat against Caps United at Sakubva Stadium yesterday.

It was the army side’s second home defeat under the tutelage of nomadic gaffer Moses Chunga.

The defeat was not taken well by some of the fans who are increasingly worried with Chunga’s erratic team selection as the soldiers, although with 36 points, are still fighting relegation.

Caps United scored first after Honey Chimutimunzeve headed in Godknows Mangani’s corner-kick.

However, the home side refused to be cowed into submission as they responded in the sixth minute through Malvern Fenyeka ferocious shot inside the box.

Impressive Buffaloes goalminder Blessing Mwandimutsira made a fine save with his legs to block Ishmael Thindwa’s strike inside the box.

But Caps United scored a hotly disputed goal on the 40th minute through a Mangani header after goalkeeper Mwandimutsira was seemingly infringed by the Caps United strikers.

It was sweet victory for Caps United gaffer Taurai Mangwiro who hinted that his game plan was based on a porous Buffaloes defence. taurai-mangwiro-(3)

“It’s a tremendous fighting spirit from my players,” Mangwiro said.

“I have watched their (Buffaloes) matches and they have shown that they are vulnerable in defence so there was no point in us sitting back and we had to attack.”

Chunga said his charges had done well and they deserved a point from the match.

“I think we deserved a point in this game,” he said. “We played well, but we were just lacking the killer punch in the box.

“We need to polish our defence. We have height in the team, but we didn’t use it to our advantage.”

Caps are angling for a top-four finish in the league to play in the Mbada Diamonds Cup.

They have 49 points with two games left and need a miracle to win the league title. They have a game against ZPC Kariba to play before the season ends.
