HARARE — The border town of Plumtree in Matabeleland South is set to have a solar power plant after a local company filed an application with the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) to set up a five megawatt station.

Independent power producer Plum Solar Private Limited’s application comes as Zimbabwe is currently experiencing a power deficit with daily electricity demand of 2 200MW against average generation of 1 100MW.Zimbabwe-Energy-Regulatory-Authority-(Zera)

The government has encouraged independent private producers (IPPs) to step in to cover the deficit.

“Zera has received an application from Plum Solar Private Limited to construct, own, operate and maintain a 5MW solar power plant for the purpose of generation and supply of electricity in Zimbabwe,” Zera in a statement said.

“The name of the generation station would be Wartrail Power Plant.”

Zera has licensed more than 15 IPPs around the country to date.
