David Mavingire of Mkoba pleaded guilty to the charge of domestic violence against his wife, Loreen Musiringi (22) when he appeared before magistrate Judith Taruvinga.

In his defence, Mavingire said he was also angered by not finding any food cooked for him when he returned from watching a football match.

Taruvinga sentenced Mavingire to pay a $60 fine, failure to which he would serve 60 days in prison. He was also sentenced to an additional 30 days in prison, which were suspended for two years on condition of good behaviour.

During sentencing, Taruvinga considered that Mavingire was a family man and that he is a first offender. The court heard that on November 9 2014 Mavingire arrived home from a beer hall around 11pm.

He requested for his conjugal rights, but his wife declined, angering the accused. The court heard that Mavingire then kicked Musiringi in the chest, before choking her.

Taruvinga lamented the prevalence of cases of domestic violence, saying there were better ways to settle arguments in homes.

“There are many ways to solve problems without using violence” she said.
