DJ Sbu flies into trouble

JOHANNESBURG — Metro FM DJ Sbu apparently caused a nightclub owner so much stress he had to see a doctor.

Lwandile Solontsi is accusing DJ Sbu, real name Sibusiso Leope, of ditching him after they agreed that the Tembisa-born entertainer would fly down to the Mother City to perform at uMtata Lounge in Strand, near Cape Town, last Sunday.

Solontsi said Leope failed to pitch and he was now demanding more than R40 000 from the DJ.

He said the money included R20 000 for Leope’s appearance fee as well as accommodation for two and security measures he had to put in place for the show.

Leope was alleged to have been at another gig at Mome’s Place in Diepsloot, north of Jo’burg, on the same Sunday he was billed for the Cape event.

Solontsi said he was angry to see Leope tweeting about another event on the same day.

A staff member from Mome’s, who did not want to give his name, confirmed that Leope was at the joint last Sunday.

Leope said: “I had a tyre burst on my way to the airport. That’s why I could not make it to his gig. I experienced a near-death situation and there was nothing else I could think about.”

Leope said he would refund Solontsi and set a different date if he still wanted him to perform.

“My management called them on Monday to tell them that we would refund them,” he said.

Asked about the performance he tweeted about at Mome’s, he said: “That is all I am going to say.”

Solontsi said he was not going to set a new date with Leope because he did not want to work with him in the future.

“His flight was booked for 6:30pm because he was going to start playing at 9:30pm. I called his manager Sanele Dlamini to find out if DJ Sbu was already making his way to the airport and (Dlamini) said he had already left,” said Solontsi.

“He later called me to tell me that DJ Sbu was in a car accident and he dropped the phone when I demanded to speak to Sbu. I called them again later and Sbu told me that he had an accident while driving to the airport.”

He said Leope told him that he was not injured and Solontsi then asked him to catch a later flight.

“This was so hurtful because my patrons were waiting for him,” said Solontsi.

“I lost business because of him and people left angry. All I want is Sbu to pay back my money,”.

“My lawyers have already sent him a letter of demand instructing him and his management to pay back all the monies incurred.”
