Robert Mugabe’s hypocrisy exposed

VICE-President Joice Mujuru’s political fortunes continue to tumble with the latest blow being the decision by the Zanu PF Mashonaland Central provincial committee to reject her nomination into the central committee.

Mujuru has been on the ropes since President Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace, went public about allegations that she was plotting to oust the Zanu PF leader.

The charges as laid out by Grace ranged from not so serious ones like that she was captured on video in a mini skirt to the very serious ones about treason and corruption.

Mujuru’s nomination to the central committee was reportedly rejected because of her alleged “nefarious activities”.

The decision of the Mashonaland Central executive means that Mujuru could be on her way out of Zanu PF’s top leadership.

Her position as vice-president of the country may become untenable unless Mugabe decides to rescue her and appoint her into the central committee, which will make her eligible for the politburo.

However, it is not for us to worry about Mujuru’s future as she has to fight her own battles like any other politician. What is disconcerting is the extent of the alleged criminal activities that she is accused of having committed in her long career with seeming impunity.

The State media has been realising one alleged dossier after the other exposing Mujuru’s supposed criminal record.

There have been accusations that the vice-president was in the habit of abusing her office to protect her family members involved in criminal activities.

Mujuru has herself been accused of being directly involved in corruption activities that make it impossible for her to continue holding that office.

Yet Mugabe has not found it necessary to relieve Mujuru of her duties.

If these allegations are true, the president must have been aware of them for a very long time. The revelations about Mujuru’s alleged criminal record put into question Mugabe’s claims that he abhors corruption and that he is a principled leader.

The reality is that the allegations piling against Mujuru expose Mugabe’s hypocrisy.
