PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe’s spokesman George Charamba has rubbished citizens’ concerns that Zimbabwe is on autopilot due to internecine infighting in Zanu PF, advising citizens instead not to read too much into the political shenanigans playing out in the faction-riddled party.

In an exclusive interview with this newspaper, Charamba said the Zanu PF restructuring exercise ahead of next week’s congress had no bearing on the functions of the government.

“I contest the idea that the restructuring happening in Zanu PF is causing problems in the government,” Charamba said. “People who work in the government are civil servants. Ideas must not be dismissed as they are implemented by the civil servants.”

He was adamant Zimbabwe was not on autopilot contending Cabinet was functioning normally. “Civil servants drive the government and politicians only give ideas. ZimAsset was formulated by Zanu PF, but is being driven and implemented by civil servants,” Charamba said.

We beg to differ. It is undeniable that a number of ministers and senior civil servants spent two weeks following First Land Grace around during her rallies, raising concern that they were neglecting their ministerial jobs and concentrating on Zanu PF’s internal conflict at the expense of the economy.

It is also undeniable key players in Zanu PF have been expending their energies in trying to outwit each other ahead of the party congress as they position themselves to eventually succeed Mugabe without paying any attention to the prevailing economic free-fall Charamba should be reminded that Zanu PF promised the nation

2,2 millions jobs in the run-up to the 2013 July 31 harmonised elections yet the facts on the ground indicate more and more workers are losing their jobs every month.

There has been lack of firm intervention from the Zanu PF administration. For instance Mugabe promised that Bulawayo would not die, but nothing has been done to prevent this becoming a reality.

The Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games are under threat due to poor preparations because those supposed to superintend over the event are deeply sucked into the succession battle, hence Wednesday’s belated tour of duty by senior government officials in Bulawayo.
