Gweru City Council has with immediate effect banned the cultivation of crops at the new proposed Mkoba 21 suburb, town clerk, Daniel Matawu said.

Matawu said the process of allocating stands to new owners was at an advanced stage, hence the prohibition of cultivating on the land.
“All residents that have been carrying out urban agriculture and cultivation on the mentioned area are advised to urgently stop, as council is processing the allocation of new stands to members of the public,” he said.
Investigations by the Southern Eye, however, revealed that some residents had already cultivated on the said new stands.
A resident, Mafios Makopa said he feared his crops would be destroyed, if the local authority went ahead with its plans.
“I am not against Gweru inhabitants getting residential stands, but my crops are under threat now, I have been feeding my family on that piece of land for years,” he said.
Council said it regretted the inconvenience to residents, but would carry on with its plans since the cultivated land was the property of the local authority.
