THE MDC-T Bulawayo province has hailed the Bulawayo City Council for crafting an education policy that provides a raft of measures to be adopted by all council schools.
SILAS NKALA STAFF REPORTER The opposition party, however, expressed disquiet at proposals by the local authority to engage debt collectors to recover money from defaulting parents or guardians.
MDC-T Bulawayo deputy spokesperson Felix Magalela Sibanda yesterday applauded the city council for putting the education policy in place to improve the level of education in the city.
“We applaud the city council for realising that education is a human right for all, particularly young people,” he said.
“We appreciate their idea of building two new schools annually. However, we urge them to see to it that these are not just ordinary schools, but science-based schools so as to enable students to have science subjects that will gain them entry into universities.”
Sibanda, however, condemned the council’s engagement of debt collectors, saying this would bankrupt parents.
“Though we condemn debt collectors, we still encourage parents to be responsible and meet the school demands,” he said.
“Parents must be the ones who choose members to be in the school development associations.”
