Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele yesterday confirmed the incident, saying the two deceased were brothers aged 13 and 17, from Lesanthe village.

“The incident occurred in the afternoon at Tsururu River, when the now-deceased in the company of their younger brother left home for a fishing escapade,” he explained.

“They were using a sack and they drowned.”

The youngest of the three, who survived, immediately returned home to inform villagers on what had happened, Ndebele said.

He said the two bodies were retrieved by villagers before the police attended the scene.

Ndebele advised the public not to wade into deep waters as it is time of the rainy season.

“People should not attempt to enter into deep waters because incidents of people drowning are on the increase,” he said.

Recently, a Bulawayo man reportedly drowned while swimming with his friends during a church trip at Boyabembuzi stream in Nkayi.
