According to the acquisition notice, Cunningham was due to have left the farm on February 1, but he stayed put.

Chief Malaki Masuku said he had not heard whether Cunningham had been evicted, adding chiefs were planning to meet Provincial Affairs minister Abedinico Ncube over the planned eviction.

“I have not heard about the eviction of Cunningham. I will call him and I will know what is happening,” he said.

“I have met Chief Maduna and will be meeting with chiefs Mabikwa, Masendu and Ndiweni.”

Chief’s council president Fortune Charumbira is expected at the meeting this week.

“In fact, all the chiefs from Matabeleland North and South are expected to meet and the land issue is ours as traditional leaders.”

Local chiefs are opposed to the acquisition and allocation of the farm to Rodney Mashingaidze, who is reportedly employed by the president’s office.

Traditional leaders say they should have been part of a lands committee that deliberated on the farm’s acquisition.

“The land is ours and as chiefs we have a say on the land,” Masuku said.

“If we do not want, that’s it.

“Ncube had promised he was going to send some official to come and hear what we are saying, but he did not.

“People promise things that they do not fulfil.

“I am going to meet him this Friday (today) in Gwanda.”

Contacted for comment, Cunningham said his daughter was still at the farm, but he was unclear on the status of its acquisition.
