AN Air Zimbabwe plane was yesterday involved in a freak accident after it reportedly hit a bird and was grounded at Victoria Falls International Airport, leaving scores of passengers stranded. Staff Reporter The national carrier was flying from Harare to Kariba, then Victoria Falls and ultimately Bulawayo, before returning to the capital.

Some passengers in Bulawayo who were travelling to Harare, were called and told not to make their way to the airport as the plane was now only expected to travel to Harare at 10pm instead of 7pm.

One of the irate passengers, Natasha Msonza, said they had been told a chartered flight had left Harare for the resort town with mechanics to repair the damaged plane.

“We were told that a chartered flight with mechanics has left Harare for Victoria Falls,” she said in exasperation.

“It’s going to be a long night, as we were told to expect the plane at 10pm.”

Msonza said, unlike others, she had not been called to be told that the flight would be delayed and so she was forced to while up time at the airport.

“This is the third time it is happening to me. I think something has to be done about either the birds or the planes,” she lamented.

An official from Air Zimbabwe confirmed that the plane had developed problems although she refused to go into details.

Efforts to get a comment late last night from Air Zimbabwe were fruitless.
