Mugabe told bussed-in supporters at his $1 million birthday jamboree in Victoria Falls on Saturday that his government would annex white-owned safaris because “our people cannot be suffering when the United States has a lot of farms occupied by their farmers”.

Farm invasions are widely blamed for decimating agriculture, once the backbone of the economy.

Mugabe said safari invasions were necessary to correct ownership imbalances among blacks and whites.

MDC-T spokesman Obert Gutu said Zimbabwe was doomed with such racist statements from Mugabe at a time the country desperately needed foreign investment to lift the troubled comatose economy.

“The MDC unreservedly condemns the crude and racist utterances that were made by Mugabe at his obscene jamboree in Victoria Falls at the weekend,”

“The MDC unreservedly condemns the crude and racist utterances that were made by Mugabe at his obscene jamboree in Victoria Falls at the weekend,” Gutu said in a statement.

“It is this type of speech that brings untold damage to brand Zimbabwe. Investors can never be keen to come and invest in a country run by an intolerant, corrupt and racist demagogue who does not even have the decency of respecting and upholding his own country’s Constitution.”

Just last week, Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa indicated that the government was ready to engage the West to attract the much-needed foreign direct investment (FDI).

Gutu said Mugabe was a shame to Africa and should immediately step down.

“Mugabe and the Zanu PF regime that he leads (are the) biggest obstacles to attracting FDI into Zimbabwe. It is a total shame for someone who is supposed to be the chair of both Sadc and the African Union to utter such retrogressive, crude and racist remarks; particularly before thousands of commandeered and clearly traumatised young Zimbabweans.

“For as long as Mugabe remains the leader of the country, Zimbabwe is doomed. This man is no longer fit for purpose. He is now a danger not only to himself, but also to his family, his deeply fractured Zanu PF party as well as the nation.”
