National Arts Merit Award (Nama) two-time nominee and founder of Umahlekisa Comedy Club, Ntandoyenkosi Van Moyo, told Woza Weekend that all was set for tomorrow’s show.

Comedy lovers will be treated to “homegrown laughs” from Moyo, Babongile Sikhonjwa, Clive Chigubhu, Elando Da General, Keith Nkosi and Zwexy Mackena.

Guest comedians Nqobizitha Dube, aka Q The Boss, and Michael K will also provide entertainment.

“We have managed over two years to convince people comedy is an art worth paying for and we have seen growth in our presentation and skill,” Moyo said.

“We made it into an industry. New deals have been struck and comedians have been engaged as master of ceremonies for various gatherings. We are arguably the second most sought after entertainment source after Zim dancehall and first choice for alternative entertainment,” he added.

Buoyed by the need to see the comedy industry grow and blossom, Moyo set up the club to accelerate the growth of stand-up comedy in Bulawayo in February 2013.

Umahlekisa, which is now home to many local comedians such as Nomsa Dee, Long John, Keith Nkosi, H O and Erlando De Genario has performed in churches, bars, hotels and restaurants.

The group has taken their hilarious acts to Harare’s Book Café, Simuka Open Mic Comedy Show and Intwasa Xtra Comedy Night, among other events.

Umahlekisa has in the past organised workshops that have groomed upcoming stand-up comedians and motivational speakers such as Bulawayo-based Mandlenkosi, Sipho Moyo, Weiller and Gweru’s Kadeem Walele, Tichawona and Neal Mpofu.

The group has invited comedians Doc Vikela, Nama 2014 winner Simbarashe Kadongonyara, aka Simba, the Comic King and Internationally-acclaimed local comedian Carl Joshua Ncube to the City of King.

Moyo has performed at the Zimbabwe Comedy Festival 2010 in Harare and his performance with South African comedian Michael Naicker at the Bulawayo Theatre stand out as his memorable shows.

Umahlekisa recently launched fortnightly Saturday Comedy Nights at Cresta Churchil Hotel in Bulawayo where it clinched a deal to provide entertainment for guests.
