Rotarians partnered with the Rotary Foundation and Rotary District 6170 in Arkansas, United States, Rotary Club of Alresford and Pro-Africa Development Trust to raise the dam wall and spillway in order to increase the capacity of the dam.

The dam is used by 70 families for drinking water, an irrigation project and for their livestock.

Bulawayo South Rotary president Alvord Mabena said the project was part of their motto to “service above self”.

“We desire to serve the community with particular focus on water and sanitation, health and child welfare, literacy and education,” he said.

“The project will greatly benefit the community of about 70 families, ensure access to water for livestock and when the dam is full, enable 21 members of the irrigation scheme to expand their crop production and increase their income.”

One of the villagers said the project came at the right time as the area faced a severe drought.

“The rains have been erratic, like in many parts of the country, exposing the need for new ways to help rural farming communities access enough water and produce enough food,” the villager said.

“The project will help us expand our crop production and increase incomes.”

Matabeleland South is one of the provinces hard hit by erratic rainfall this season and the government has already advised farmers to destock amid fears water sources would dry up soon.
