The accident reportedly happened at 8pm along the Gweru-Shurugwi Road and the victims died on the spot.

Midlands police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the accident, but said details surrounding the crash were still sketchy.

“The accident occurred yesterday (Saturday) at around 8 pm at the Senga round about along the Gweru-Shurugwi road,” she said.

“We are still investigating the accident. I can only say this was a fatal accident and we are yet to know whether they were from MSU or not.”

Mukwende said names of the deceased were still being withheld until their next of kin had been informed.

“We have not yet notified their next of kin about the deaths so for now we cannot release the names of the deceased,” she said.

The bodies are being kept at the Gweru General Hospital mortuary.

Horrific pictures of the accident scene were splashed on social networking sites by Midlands State University (MSU) students who claimed the three were learners at the institution. Efforts to get a comment from the MSU information department were fruitless yesterday.
