The incident happened at the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG).

Daniel Chilongo (36) of Luveve, Bulawayo, had not been asked to plead to the charge when he appeared before Bulawayo senior magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze charged with assaulting Hadson Mafesi (24) of Suburbs.

Mafesi filed an affidavit asking the court to withdraw the charges against the accused. Prosecutor Tawurai Hondoyemoto had told the court that on April 21 2015 at 6:45pm, Chilongo went to the UCKG church situated at corner 13th Avenue and Fort Street in Bulawayo, where he was attending a church service with the complainant.

Chilongo went out of the church building and returned armed with a stone that he used to attack Mafesi.

He struck him on the left side of the head and he fell to the ground.

Chilongo then fled the scene, but church mates gave chase and apprehended him before handing him to the police. Mafesi sustained a deep cut on the left side of the head and was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital where he is reportedly still admitted.

Chilongo is one of the known Zanu PF youth members involved in the party’s indigenisation and youth empowerment programmes.
