FORMER Pumula MP Albert Mhlanga who is contesting the June 10 by-election as an independent candidate claims disgruntled Zanu PF members have pledged to vote for him ahead of the June 10 by-election. By Luyanduhlobo Makwati

Mhlanga was fired from the National Assembly alongside 21 MDC Renewal MPs after they broke away from MDC-T.

He told Southern Eye he was confident of retaining his seat after Zanu PF supporters reportedly complained that the party’s candidate in the polls Godfrey Malaba was imposed.

“They (Zanu PF supporters) are coming to my house every day to report each other about their factional fights,” he said.

“Most of them have told me that they would not vote for the elected Zanu PF member because he was imposed on them.”

Mhlanga expressed confidence that the squabbling in Zanu PF might play in his favour.

“Since 1999 people in Pumula have never voted for Zanu PF. They will vote for me,” the former Bulawayo deputy mayor said.

“Some of the Zanu PF supporters visit my house at night to tell me that what Saviour Kasukuwere [Zanu PF political commissar] did by imposing Malaba will not work because they do not support him and they will rather vote for me,” he said.

However, members of the Zanu PF Bulawayo provincial executive could not be reached for comment over Mhlanga’s claims.
