This comes amid reports that the city’s housing backlog was now close to 100 000 people.

In an interview at the just-ended International Social Security System annual conference held in Victoria Falls, NSSA chief executive officer James Matiza said the parastatal and the Bulawayo City Council were already trying to identify the land suitable for the project.

“We are engaging with the council to get affordable land and within ZimAsset, the government has promised to give us land to build these houses,” said Matiza.

“Currently, we have an ongoing project of servicing about 680 stands in Masvingo, we will follow with Bulawayo when we have completed the Masvingo project.”

“For Masvingo, we paid for the land, but now with the new structure of ZimAsset, the Local Government ministry has promised to give us free land.”

Public Service minister Priscah Mupfumira recently announced that NSSA was planning to launch a building society bank.

“Banks exploit people through the high interest rate that they charge,” Mupfumira said .

“They (banks) get money from NSSA and instead of charging 4% they charge 18% when they would have got the money at 7%.

“NSSA has decided to assist directly and provide accessible and affordable building society services to lower markets who are the largest contributors of NSSA like civil servants.”
