Constable Felix Sangu (29) denied the theft charge when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa.

He was remanded out of custody to June 11 for continuation of trial.

Prosecutor Munyonga Kuvarega told the court that sometime between February 2 and 22, Sangu, did not report for duty and failed to hand over the canteen cash stock and records to other police officers on duty.

Police later conducted a spot check on the canteen financial records and discovered that stock valued at $1 260,76 was entered on the stock sheet, change valued at $287,88 was not receipted or banked and empties valued at $121,40 were missing.

When Sangu was quizzed over the alleged discrepancies by the officer-in-charge, he failed to account for the missing stock and cash, leading to his arrest.
