A GWERU-BASED non-governmental organisation has partnered with the Midlands State University (MSU) to host a widows’ party this Friday as part of commemorations to mark the International Women’s Day.

Hopeful Life for Widows and Orphans in Africa Trust director Alice Shiri told Southern Eye that they decided to fete widows because they were often ignored and yet they bore the brunt of many societal injustices.
“We have many widows who are facing poverty and other social injustices, yet little is done to address their plight,” Shiri said.
“As a trust we will partner MSU to commemorate the day on June 26 at 17 Claybank Road Windsor Park where there will be various activities.”
Shiri said they would address issues to do with social stigmatisation and economic deprivation faced by widows.
International Widows Day is a United Nations-ratified day of action to address the poverty and injustices faced by millions of widows and their dependents in many countries. The commemorations are annually held on June 23.
