Mhlanga said the decline in the dams’ capacity called for residents to continue using water sparingly.

“Our dam levels have fallen and we pray that this year’s rainy season is good, but we should continue with the spirit of water-rationing,” he said.

Last year, Gweru City Council introduced water-rationing that saw households in both the city’s low and high-density suburbs receiving 500 litres of water per day.

The chairperson of the commission running the affairs at council, Tsunga Mhangami, recently said power cuts were affecting water-pumping pressure further reducing supplies to residents.

In addition to the power cuts, aging pumps continue to worsen the water problems faced by the city.

Last year city fathers proposed that ratepayers make a once-off payment of $20 towards procurement of water pumps to replace the current archaic pumps, but the proposal was shot down by the residents.

Gweru has over the years been grappling with obsolete water-pumping equipment which has affected the city’s capacity to supply residents with adequate running water.
