Frank Ngwenya (45) however, denied the charge of corruptly concealing a transaction from the principal when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Tinashe Tashaya last Friday.

The magistrate granted him $100 bail and remanded the matter to April 1.

The court heard that sometime between March 18, 2012 and June 14, 2014, Ngwenya served as a cemetery assistant and his duties included receiving payment for the graves, allocating graves and monitor grave diggers.

The State alleges that during that period he illegally allocated 323 graves at West Park Cemetery for burial of adults knowing well that the area was reserved for children’s burials.

As a result, council lost $13 692 in potential revenue.

The offence was later discovered by council officials who reported the matter to the police, leading to Ngwenya’s arrest.
