Patrick Zvandikona (26) denied the $425 fraud charge and malicious injury to property when he appeared before provincial magistrate Letwin Rwodzi over the weekend.

Prosecutor Fiona Mukwena told the court that Zvandikona was sold out by the school’s CCTV footage, which captured him entering the premises in the dead of the night on March 29 wearing a white jacket, black and white underwear and covering his head with a black plastic bag.

He, according to the video footage, torched the bursar’s office with the intention of destroying evidence of embezzlement of funds levelled against him. The headmaster, Charles Nzvenge, told the court that property worth $4 182 was lost in the inferno.

The court heard Zvandikona had been given the $425 on March 24 to cover expenses for a school sporting trip, but allegedly converted it to his own use. The alleged bombing occurred at a time the bursar was demanding receipts for the money.

Detectives allegedly recovered the white jacket and underwear from Zvandikona’s house.

They also recovered CCTV footage of the accused buying fuel from a service station on the night of the attack.

Zvandikona, who was represented by Hore and Hore attorneys, appearing before provincial magistrate Letwin Rwodzi, was remanded in custody to today, for bail ruling.
