GWERU regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire has expressed concern over the increase in sodomy cases in the Midlands province.

Nemadire made the remarks last Wednesday, while sentencing a 24-year-old Gweru man who had sodomised his neighbour’s 12-year-old son.

“There is a worrying trend in the increase of sodomy cases in the Midlands province and there is need for long sentences to curb such crimes,” Nemadire said before sentencing the sodomite to an effective 12-year jail term. The man could not be named to protect the identity of the juvenile.

“A long prison term will send a clear message to such like-minded persons that the courts will not tolerate acts of indecent assault against young boys,” he said.

Prosecuting Andrew Marimo had told the court that on April 24 this year, the boy was walking along Matobo Road when he met the sodomite who dragged him into a nearby bush and indecently abused him.

The boy screamed for help and the man released him and fled into the bush after the act.

Passers-by, however, gave chase and handed him to the police.
