PLAYERS from Bulawayo Chess Club (BCC) dominated the men’s category of the Bulawayo Chess Association Winter Chess tournament at Bulawayo Polytechnic on Saturday.

The major highlight of the day saw Lungelwe Nyoni of BCC dethroning last year’s winner Thabang Moyo, also of BCC, after the two finished tied with the winner being decided through a tie break.
Moyo settled for second position while Russel Dzete came in at third. Bruce Mhondiwa of BCC finished on fourth position with ZRP’s Maxwell Masare finishing fifth.
Upcoming young chess star Nomalungelo Mathe caused an upset in the women’s category clinching this year’s title relegating Busi Ncube of Bulawayo Poly to second.
The third spot was claimed by another Sizane student Tyl Musasa while Gumire Mhete of ZRP came in at fourth position. BCC’s Felistus Sibanda finished fifth.
In the consolation prizes for students that participated in the games, Patrice Sibanda of Sizane High was the best player in the boys’ category while Gifford’s Bhekile Ndlovu and Archford Matiringe were in second and third place respectively.
The girls category for the best scholar prizes was dominated by students from Sizane with Mathe coming in at first position while schoolmate Musasa came in at second position while Maud Mpofu was third.

Faustino Nyangari of Bulawayo Poly won the best player award when he finished on 5,5 points while Gibson Manhuru won the best veteran player award.
The youngest player to participate in this year’s edition was Milton Junior’s Nkosenhle Mlibaza. The next chess tournament will be a team event to be held at Khami Prisons on July 27.
