BULAWAYO City council (BCC) has called for tenders for the supply, installation and commissioning of a crematorium at West Park Cemetery, as the city struggles to find new burial space.

The local authority has been negotiating with land owners to create cemetery sites, as it moves to cope with the increasing demand for burial space in Bulawayo.

In a notice, Town Clerk, Middleton Nyoni invited tenders from professionally qualified service providers to spruce up the crematorium, which has been using a wood-fired cremator since the diesel one malfunctioned.

“Service providers should submit formal proposals for assessment of the cremation facility at the city’s West Park Crematorium,” read the notice.

He said the suitable company would compile “relevant specifications of the replacement cremation need of the city”.

“A detailed costing of the recommended works including modification of civil structure and supply, installation and commissioning of works will also be expected.”

Last year, the council made several calls to residents to consider cremation, as the city was fast running out of burial space due to high death rates.

Nyoni said the service provider is also expected to train council staff on the operation and maintenance of the commissioned remote sensing equipment.

Cremations in the city are mainly done by people of Asian origin as well as the white community.
