ECONET Wireless Zimbabwe, the official telecommunication partner for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly, has donated a $100 000 state-of-the-art communication centre to the Tourism and Hospitality ministry ahead of the general assembly next month.

Zimbabwe and Zambia will co-host the 20th session of the UNWTO General Assembly from August 24 to 29 in Victoria Falls and Livingstone respectively.
Speaking at the communication centre official handover ceremony last week in Harare, Econet chief marketing officer Isaiah Nyangari said the UNWTO conference was a unique event that Zimbabwe had to leverage on.
“It’s a great pleasure to be given the opportunity to partner with the ministry.
“We saw that it was an opportunity for us to showcase what Zimbabwe has and we took the opportunity as the leading network in the country,” Nyangari said.
Nyangari said Econet had the infrastructure to take Zimbabwe forward and had invested in the fibre network and in mobile technology. “When our visitors come through, they need to make sure that we have got the gadgets and we have the infrastructure for them to communicate and indeed we have that infrastructure,” Nyangari said.
He said Econet had committed to build two new state-of-the-art communication centres in Harare and Victoria Falls and also to provide the latest communication gadgets to the ministry ahead of the general assembly.

He said the communication centre would enable the ministry to offer world-class communication services for the UNWTO conference.
“There is a lot of work which still needs to be done in terms of laying fibre and that will enable Econet and the ministry to be able to offer a world-class communication for the UNWTO General Assembly,” said Nyangari.
“We have also made a commitment to provide the latest communication gadgets to the ministry in the form of iPhones and iPads.
“We are not only ending up in Harare in terms of building the communication centre, we are also going to replicate the same in Victoria Falls.
“We are putting in place a new state-of-the-art communication centre and work has already begun in Victoria Falls.”
As one of the leading communication networks in Zimbabwe, Nyangari said Econet was also going to put in place the latest technology — long-term evolution — in Victoria Falls to ensure world-class communication service.
Tourism and Hospitality Industry minister Walter Mzembi said Victoria Falls had been declared a cyber-city for the UNWTO General Assembly set for next month.
“We have transformed Victoria Falls into a cyber- city and it will become, in the future, one of the legacies for hosting this general assembly,” Mzembi added.
