“Small houses — small houses!  They have become a real menace,” he said.

“Even in Cabinet I do have adulterous members and I then say to them, ‘if you are indulging in such activities, why mock Tsvangirai?’” Mugabe and Zanu PF have made Tsvangirai’s messy love life part of their campaign strategy.

After losing his wife Susan in a road accident in 2009, Tsvangirai was linked to a string of women before marrying his present wife, Elizabeth Macheka.

While Mugabe was having a go at Tsvangirai, the MDC-T leader said Mugabe’s arrogance and failure to leave power was a result of his marriage to a young wife who is dictating the pace and forcing him to continue ruling despite his advanced age.

Grace is 40 years younger than Mugabe. Addressing party supporters in Mashonaland East yesterday, Tsvangirai said Mugabe confided in him that he was afraid to leave for fear of plunging his Zanu PF into chaos.

“Sadc told him to come up with a new constitution to build the economy and health and that if these issues are addressed then we go for elections – but he is arrogant and you never know whether it is inborn or due to old age,” he said.

“The problem is that if you marry a young wife and she keeps insisting and pushing you, you cannot resist that. “That’s the problem, but the important thing is that this time we should give him a pension.”

Tsvangirai said Mugabe had told him he wanted to retire, after the MDC-T leader had asked him  why he was clinging onto power and  sleeping through various meetings.
