ZAPU president Dumiso Dabengwa has said the party is going back to the drawing board to re-strategise ahead of the next general elections in 2018 after being thumped in last week’s polls.

Zapu failed to get even a council seat in the elections won by President Robert Mugabe and his Zanu PF party. According to the MDC-T and other independent poll observers, the poll was a farce.
Dabengwa’s party formed a coalition with Welshman Ncube’s MDC before the elections, but the pact appears to have made no impact as the two parties went on to suffer crushing defeats.
“We have travelled a long, thorny road together — seeking nothing but justice and peace. Our fight is nothing but the establishment of a truly democratic State. “You stood firm and showed the rest that we are coming back in 2018 much better prepared and stronger,” Dabengwa said in a statement addressed to party supporters. Dabengwa thanked supporters for voting for Zapu during the elections.
“I am humbled by theconfidence and trust you showed in me and your party Zapu. My profound appreciation goes to you all for what you did on election day. “ Zapu’s ultimate goal is to redeem those ideals for which the liberation struggle was all about,” he added.
Dabengwa’s party has indicated that it will challenge Mugabe’s poll victory. Zapu spokesperson Mjobisa Nuku, when asked yesterday if the party was pressing ahead with the court challenge, told Southern Eye that “there will be a full statement tomorrow (today)”.
The MDC-T is also challenging Mugabe’s victory, but some analysts — notably the National Constitutional Assembly — have urged the party to accept defeat and re-strategise to save face.
