The decision was made at a Bulawayo provincial meeting that was attended by party leader Morgan Tsvangirai, his deputy Thokozani Khupe, national organising secretary Nelson Chamisa and his deputy Abednico Bhebhe.
MDC-T Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Mandla Sibanda confirmed the developments, saying Nyathi was nominated in a democratic exercise.
“The decision was unanimous,” he said.
“The national executive received a list of names of people interested in taking the post of mayor and embarked on a selection process.
“The process was conducted in a democratic manner and involved discussions with the candidates on how they would run the city if they landed the post.”
The news comes as a big blow for lawyer Kucaca Phulu who for a long while had been the frontrunner for the post.
