MDC yesterday said MDC-T deputy national organising secretary Abednico Bhebhe had no moral authority to accuse his party’s councillors of taking bribes as he was guilty of the same crime.

Bhebhe on Tuesday accused Zanu PF of bribing MDC-T councillors to vote for its mayors in Victoria Falls, Redcliff and Kwekwe.

The MDC-T-dominated Mutare council also voted for a Zanu PF candidate for deputy mayor, with Bhebhe saying the party would deal with the culprits.

MDC expelled Bhebhe alongside Njabuliso Mguni and Norman Mpofu in 2009 for allegedly receiving money from MDC-T to vote for Lovemore Moyo as Speaker of Parliament.

“Bhebhe is the wrong person to cry foul when councillors are following their leader,” charged MDC national spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube. “Bhebhe initiated and promoted post-election bribery when he led a team to Botswana to defect to MDC-T and we all know what happened afterwards “Like they say in Ndebele, udiwo lufuze imbiza (like father like son).”

MDC youth secretary-general Discent Bhajila on his Facebook page said: “While it was wrong for MDC-T councillors to vote for Zanu PF members to lead local authorities, it is unacceptable collusion of the highest magnitude for Abednico Bhebhe to attack those people.

“He must be reminded of how he defied his own party in the Speaker of Parliament elections. Bhebhe must just shut up.”

But Bhebhe was unapologetic yesterday saying even his actions in 2008 had the blessings of the people in his constituency.

“They don’t know what they are talking about. They should go and ask their boss Welshman Ncube about what happened between me and him,” he said.

“I was mandated by the people of Nkayi to do what I did and this is the reason why they voted me into office in the July 2013 elections.”

Bhebhe said it was unforgivable for MDC-T councillors to “associate with Zanu PF”.
