SHABANIE Mine clinched the $120 000 BancABC Sup8r Cup in style, upstaging FC Platinum 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out after an exciting 120 minutes of football at Mandava Stadium yesterday.

Regulation time did not produce any goals for both sides and after 30 minutes of extra-time, Shabanie Mine got their spot kicks through Blessed Mbavarira, Valentine Ndaba, William Ngonya, goalkeeper Victor Twaliki and man-of-the-match, skipper Tafadzwa Mombeshora. Mombeshora put the icing on the cake with the fifth take after Platinum’s Obrey Chirwa had missed the fourth penalty.

FC Platinum scored their three penalties through captain Daniel Veremu, Winston Mhango and Thabani Kamusoko and walked away with $70 000 for becoming losing finalists.

Shabanie Mine head coach Luke Masomere was elated for winning the trophy with Shabanie Mine who last won a piece of silverware in 2001 when they beat Dynamos 1-0 in the BP Cup.

“I am really happy about winning the cup. I’m happy with the way my boys played. It was a pulsating match. Everybody is happy and everybody is smiling. We relied on team work and we stuck to our game plan. I am only hoping for better things to come,” Masomere said.

Shabanie bundled Dynamos out of the tournament in the semis in a 4-3 penalty shoot-out at Barbourfields Stadium on September 1, said.

His counterpart at Platinum, Lloyd Mutasa said, they lost the game in regulation time.

“We lost the plot in the 90 minutes and that put us in a disadvantage. We thought were going to get goals in normal time, but that was not to be. It’s part and parcel of the game of football,” Mutasa said.

Tarisai Rukanda, Pervington Zimunya and Caleb Masocha troubled the FC Platinum defence in the first half as the platinum miners relied more on the counter-raid.

They could have registered their first goal in the 21st minute when Zimunya’s curler from a dead-ball situation from the left almost beat FC Platinum goalkeeper Francis Tizayi who punched the ball away for a corner-kick.

In the 32nd minute, Donald Ngoma did right to dribble past Mbavarira on the left, but was too quick to cross the ball and Twaliki cut in to make a save.

The tables then turned for Shabanie Mine in the second half. Platinum had the upper hand with the coming in of Zambian Chirwa, up to the end of 90 minutes.

Action in extra time swung from one end to the other until the match had to be decided by a penalty lottery.
