KEVIN MAPASURE IN MUTARE

Caps United progressed to the Mbada Diamonds Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Harare rivals Motor Action in a match that went all the way to a sudden death penalty shoot-out at Sakubva Stadium, Mutare, yesterday.

Emmanuel Mandiranga missed the crucial kick at the back of a Steven Makataku conversion for Caps to give the Harare giants a much-needed passage through.

Ronald Pfumbidzai, Leonard Fiyado, Tapiwa Khumbuyani, Tawanda Munyanduri and Makataku all scored for Caps while Benson Maglas and Hardlife Zvirekwi had their efforts saved by Marlon Jani.

For Motor Action Godfrey Moyo, Ngoni Maviri, Walter Musona, Passmore Bernard, Wisdom Mutasa and Collins Dhuwa all converted from the spot while Douglas Walaza and Clive Sibanda had their efforts saved by man-of-the-match Tafadzwa Dube.

Both teams rued missed chances to go to the nerve-wrecking lottery with Motor Action strikers missing a glut in the first half while Caps United frontrunners could not turn the team’s dominance into goals.

Musona, Yves Ebabali and Maviri proved a handful for the Caps defenders in the first half, but they all took turns to miss the target as Motor Action pushed for an opener.

Caps coach Taurai Mangwiro said he was pleased the goalkeeper had kept them in the match in the first half.

“Once we survived the first half siege I knew we would win the match, Mangwiro said. I expected Motor Action to play the way they did, but we took charge in the second half and should have won it in regulation time.”

Zvirekwi had a quiet day and really should have won it for Caps on several occasions, but he failed.

Jani emerged hero for his team when he denied Fiyado in a one-on-one situation.
