The chief executive officer of the Heath Streak Consultancy&Sports Development Joseph Rego, on Friday revealed that one of the city’s successful businessman and sports enthusiast Rajesh Modi who runs a chain of retail supermarkets in the City of Kings and Queens is the man behind the academy which is touted to become a world-class sporting facility.

The Heath Streak Academy will start functioning next month and one of the major objectives of the initiative is reviving corporate- sponsored leagues, club cricket, social cricket tournaments and healthy sport activities in the city.

“I have been friends with Raj Modi for hardly three months. His generous contributions to society are incredible,” Rego said.

Rego has, however, remained tight-lipped on the business mogul’s exact financial involvement in the project. Modi was part of the delegation at the launch of the Heath Streak Consultancy and Sports Development early last month at a local hotel.

Rego said Modi is not the only one who has chipped int. Modi took time to pay tribute to quite a number of corporates that have lent a helping hand in seeing that the country’s children (in particular Bulawayo’s) are endeared to the sport of cricket, which has become popular over the years.

Some of the companies include Udine Products, Davis Granite, PPC Cement, Haggie Rand, Bonsa and Parkland Spar and Shield Security.

“Udine Products, Davis Granite and PPC Cement have ensured security for the children of our society by constructing the ‘Boundary Wall.’ “The estimated cost of building this wall is $20 000.

“Instrumental behind this community development initiative have been Krispen Mugova, managing director Udine Products; Njombo Lekula, managing drector and Gavin Stephens, commercial director of PPC Cement and Ken Jerrard chief executive officer, Davis Granite.

“Haggie Rand Zimbabwe’s Commercial director Hope Tagarira is awaiting the fencing material to arrive from South Africa to fence the complete net practice area, which has been estimated at $18 000.

“This benevolent donation was sanctioned by Haggie Rand Zimbabwe’s managing director Chemist Gomba a fortnight ago,” Rego added.
