The health institution’s chief executive officer Lawrence Mantiziba said the resource mobilisation strategy was aimed at improving services and rehabilitating some of the hospital’s dilapidated wards.

He said the hospital requires relevant equipment for it to fully function and match international standards of healthcare.

“We have plans to host a fundraising dinner on October 26 and we are calling on members of the corporate world to come on board and help the institution so that people of Bulawayo could get proper treatment,” Mantiziba said.

He said fundraising dinners have been pivotal in raising money to assist the hospital refurbish some wards.

The hospital seeks to refurbish the theatres, laundry machines, autoclaves and elevators, among other materials.

“Currently, our causality ward has improved and the outlook of the ward matches and meets the required standard as far as health delivery is concerned. We received funding from one company (which attended a previous fundraising dinner) that we cannot name,” Mantiziba said.

He said all the hospital’s elevators had broken down and this had created a problem for both staff members and patients admitted in wards upstairs.

Mpilo Hospital has been on the verge of collapse over the last decade due to a general lack of funding and a flight of experienced and qualified health personnel.
