HWANGE Golf Club is expected to attract a huge field of amateur golfers when it hosts the Hwange Open after it was granted Order of Merit by the Zimbabwe Golf Association in June.

The Hwange Open which usually draws participants from around the country and beyond will be held later this month. Hwange Golf Club captain Edwin Moyo yesterday confirmed the dates of this year’s competition.

“The tournament will start with the pro-ams on October 24. There will be serious pro-am competition on October 25-27. We are expecting about 120 golfers to take part. Sponsorship for this year’s tournament will mainly come from Hwange Colliery Company. “Charferfly and many other companies are also sponsoring the competition,” he said.

Moyo said they will also be expecting golfers from outside the country to take part in the competition. “This year we are expecting even more golfers to participate in the competition because the golf course was given an order of merit, so this is likely to attract more golfers,” he said.

According to Zambezi Tour, the Hwange Open will be sponsored by Hwange Colliery Company Limited and Hwange Open Organising Committee to the tune of $15 000. The competition will start with a pro-am event followed by 54 holes stroke play from October 25-27.

Bulawayo Golf Club professional Brian Gondo was winner of last year’s competition. Gondo, won the event by one shot to finish on a gross score of 140 (four-under par), pocketing $3 600 in the process after taking a five-shot lead and got six-under par 66.

Nyasha Muyambo and Ignatius Mketekete were second on three- under par 141, receiving $2 070 in the process. Seasoned golfer Tongoona Charamba, who had been the defending champion and was a pre-tournament favourite, finished the competition on position five after carding a two-over par 146.

The tournament attracted 33 golfers who took to the greens in two rounds — 36 holes stroke play over two days. Roy Da Costa was fourth having shot 75 on Saturday before finishing on three-under par 69 on Sunday. Zambian professional Patrick Mwendapole one of the participants, finished eighth after getting a gross score of 147 (three-under par).
