THE MDC-T-dominated Masvingo City Council’s first special council meeting that had been scheduled for Monday evening was aborted after four Zanu PF councillors walked out in protest over the late arrival of mayor Hubert Fidze. TATENDA CHITAGU OWN CORRESPONDENT

Ward 1 councillor Gashia Mundondo, Lovemore Mufamba (Ward 10), Tassision Mandava (Ward 2) and Against Chiteme walked out accusing Fidze of “belittling” and taking them for granted by arriving late for the scheduled meeting.

Fidze said he had been out of the country and had communicated that he would arrive late and had also given the councillors the green light to go ahead with the meeting in his absence.

“I am surprised because we had pledged to put our political differences aside to work together for the good of residents,” Fidze said.

“The meeting could have gone ahead, but I was told they walked out, and besides, I had told them I got delayed, but I would make it, so there was no need for such behaviour,” Fidze said.

He said the meeting has been rescheduled for today.

“We are set to hold the special council meeting on Wednesday (today),” he said.

This is not the first time that the four Zanu PF councillors have staged a walkout.

Last month, the quartet forced a meeting to select council committees to end prematurely after they threatened to disengage demanding that the deputy mayoral post as well as the chair of the finance, manpower and housing committee be given to Zanu PF insisting their party had a two-third parliamentary majority.
