Prisons public relations officer for Matabeleland, Bothwell Bhosha, said the four teams left the country for South Africa on Tuesday.

“The teams left yesterday (Tuesday) but they put up in Beitbridge and crossed the South African border today (yesterday). They are going out there in Polokwane to represent Matabeleland in games against prisons in Polokwane,” Bhosha said.

The 58 prison officers will take part in football, volleyball, netball and darts competitions.

Bhosha said the games might not be having monetary prizes, but they would be good for developing social and interactive skills for the participants.

In October, the prison officers took part in the Inter-State Prison Services Tournament in Botswana.

“These are just social and interactive games, so we are not that much worried about monetary prizes. But they will come with trophies if they do well. The games develop good interactive and social skills for those who are taking part. We are expecting the teams back home on Friday because this is just a one-day event,” he said.

He added that the teams that went to represent the province were selected two weeks back at Khami Prison where prison officers from all Matabeleland prison services camps showcased their talents.
